Hybrid CAS for Telecom operators

The hybrid market for telecom operators

With the growth in the pay-TV market, TV has become an essential ingredient for telecom operators’ triple play offers. This has in turn led to the growth in demand for hybrid services (IP for VOD and DVB broadcast for live TV) for regions where IP bandwidth is insufficient for live TV services.

According to ABI Research, the global market for hybrid set-top boxes continues to grow with a 9% CAGR (Compound Annual Growth Rate between 2011 and 2016), to reach 150 million hybrid set-top-boxes shipped worldwide in 2016.

Telecom operator needs

Telecom operators are seeking to extend their TV footprint by providing secured premium pay-TV services (including high-definition) to areas that are not eligible for IPTV due to lower IP bandwidths. This will enable them to increase their revenues and customer loyalty.

One of the telecom operator’s main concerns is to optimise its return-on-investment on services such as premium content by selling to a wider audience. In addition, with the rapid growth in demand for high-definition TV (HDTV), telecom operators are keen to avoid heavy investment in bandwidth and infrastructure by providing HDTV through an existing broadcast network with a high quality of service (QOS) and quality of experience (QOE).

Piracy has for a long time now been a fact of life in the broadcast environment, which means that telecom operators need to select state of the art security solutions in order to gain access to and protect their premium content over a DVB network (DTH or DTT).
